FFsplit

Whatever you do, it is always hard to start. Streaming process is not an exception. You can have a powerful PC, you can have high level of charisma but that will not get you close to streaming. You’ll be a streamer only after you’ll manage which software you need and what will you do with it.

That’s when it comes to FFSplit. In this article we’re going to talk about its features and, what is much more important, what makes this software unique by all means.

What is FFSplit?

FFSplit is a lightweight utility that lets you capture videos from multiple sources and composite them into a live video feed. Of course, it deals with its basic function – streaming – with ease. So, it is something like OBS Studio and XSplit combined. FFSplit allows you to switch between different media-sources, webcam, chosen screen parts, videogames, flash-content, etc. while you stream.

Features

Simplicity

By using the inbuilt overlay, which controls all functions of FFSplit, you can change the settings without closing your game. The registration on website is very simple. You can just connect FFSplit to your Facebook account. The installation of the software is also straight forward but may take some time so be patient.

Interaction tools

The program supports all types of web-notifications and widgets: Youtube Super Chat and Twitch Cheers, Facebook chat, Mixer chat, Twitch chat and Youtube chat widgets.

Completely Free

You never have to pay to use it. Ever. FFSplit is distributed as a freeware (possibly open source in the future).

Stream control

You can use the special effects to scenes and sources. There is an ability to use both pre-uploaded effects as well as adding your own ones. The scene preview editor will allow you to edit the scenes before showing them online.

FFSplit also contains an add-on to work with macros. It can create a scenario for almost every possible operation or set of operations; text editor also supports users’ scripts.

Great Performance

FFsplit is highly optimized to give you the best performance so you can focus more on what’s important.

Text adding

You can add text strings and show them directly on the stream by simply creating them in FFSplit interface.

Dead project?

When you enter the website, one of the first messages to greet you is “The project is currently not in active development. Follow us on Twitter or visit our Discord community for the latest news and update.”

Of course, we have visited both twitter and discord and this is what we have now: the last version of FFSplit was released in early 2013 (ver. 0.7.0 23 build). What is more important, though their discord contains only 90 users, they still answer users’ questions which means that this project can someday rise again.

Setting up the stream

To get started with testing, you need to ensure that you meet the requirements below:

  1. Minimum quad-core CPU. (Intel Core 2 Quad, i5/i7 1st and 2nd
generation, AMD Phenom II 955+/1055+, Bulldozer)
  2. Directshow Screen Capturing Software: VH Screen Capture,
    Screen-Capturer-Recorder
  3. Stereo Mix / Loopback Audio / Record What You Hear recording
option available. Check: Control Panel -> Sound -> Recording.

Once you meet the above requirement, you need to obtain your FMS Stream Link. You can usually Google how to find them. I have listed
steps for two common streaming sites below:

For Justin.TV / Twitch.TV:

  1. Go to http://www.twitch.tv/broadcast
  2. Click Show Key button on top right
  3. Your stream link will then be rtmp://live.justin.tv/app/ + Stream Key

Example: If your Stream Key is live_02279658_ZsTcXg, then your Stream Link will be: rtmp://live.justin.tv/app/live_02279658_ZsTcXg

For Own3d.TV:

  1. Go to own3d.tv, Profile – My Livestream – Edit
  2. Scroll down to optain FMS URL and FMS Stream
  3. Combine them to get your Stream Link

Example: If your FMS URL is rtmp://live.use.own3d.tv/live and your FMS Stream is taqattack_414634_zdg8493f9d, then your Stream URL will be rtmp://live.use.own3d.tv/live/taqattack_414634_zdg8493f9d

The next steps are:

  1. Download general-build-0.7.0, extract and Run FFsplit.exe.
  2. Select the appropriate Video Source to record your screen.
  3. Select Stereo Mix option from Audio Source.
  4. Select your video bitrate in kbps. 0 means there is no limit. Your streaming will probably stop if you keep it at this option. We recommend 75% of your maximum upload speed.
  5. Select your video encoding preset level. Default options autosets encoding level. The slower the encode level is lower the required upload speed is needed. However, this affects your CPU speed and cause your game to lag. Choose the level that you are most comfortable gaming with. This is for you to play around with.
  6. Select your streaming resolution and framerate. Pretty straight forward.
  7. Select audio bitrate. Higher bitrate means better quality but there’s no noticeable increase in quality after 128kbps.
  8. Enter your Stream Link.
  9. When you are ready, press Start. Note: The program should lock your GUI for a bit. You can turn on the Debug Console from Settings -> Enable Debug Console.

Now, after we’ve talked about the app’s features and good sides, let’s get to the shortlist of its advantages and disadvantages, just to sum up everything.

7.5 Total Score
FFSplit is a great streaming tool you can have for free

It has a lot of powerful features to make streaming easy. The app is very intuitive. All the functions are pretty straight forward. Even those, who have never worked with streaming before, will not have problems while using FFSplit. It’s also hard not to appreciate how well this service is designed. Overlay and all the widgets look pretty cool. Even though rare bugs will remain unfixed probably forever, the relationship between the creators and community looks charming. So, yes, you should definitely try this software out.

PROS
  • Simplicity of using
  • Pretty design
  • Rich variety of custom settings
  • Little load on your system
CONS
  • Lags can occur
  • You cannot expect bug fixes or updates soon
  • Inability to stream on multiple resources at the same time
