Smashcast

We live in a digital era. Everything is now somehow connected with computers and technologies. Even sports. Nowadays it is called ‘e-sports’ and it means literally ‘professional computer gaming’. Well, if you’re into that kind of sport, you’ll need to have a special treatment for it.

You can’t just leave the replay on Youtube, you need to stream it and you need to have decent live comments. Usually, people choose common services like Twitch or YouTube Gaming in order to spend less time while searching for a good platform to stream on. But, to be honest, those services can be used even to broadcast your daily life etc. That’s why we will take a look on Smashcast. That’s also a streaming platform but for those of you who search for the best quality of gaming streams specifically.

What is that?

Smashcast is a live streaming platform that materialized after the merger of Azubu and Hitbox.tv in May 2017. Like any other streaming platform, it has its own features that definitely define Smashcast as one of the best streaming platforms for gaming ever existed. So, what are they?

Features

Easy registration process

For those of you who are lazy enough to search or even to create a mail account, Smashcast created an integration between itself and huge variety of social networks. Now you can log in via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or even VK – Russian social media, and this list will expand in future.

Quality

Of course, you can stream with 1080p-60fps on Twitch or any other streaming platform. But those platforms will never allow you to stream in 4k-resolution like Smashcast does. And don’t worry, graphical settings are easy to change in order not to burn your mobile internet traffic.

Hype-o-meter

Whenever you watch an e-sports match, you can send emoji in chat. The ‘hype level’ will be based on the amount of different emoji sent in chat, and later will be displayed in a stream. If you don’t want to see the emotes flying across the stream, there is a way to turn them off!

At the top of the video player, click the cogwheel, and select to ‘Disable Cheers’. This will turn them off for only you (and stored in a browser cookie). Turning them back on is the same process.

Tape

Another great Smashcast feature is a tape. It kinda integrates social aspect. It allows you to share news with your viewers. You can post video and audio with your posts, which can be up to 3000 symbols.

What can and can’t you stream on Smashcast?

Here is  a list of what can be streamed:

  • Original Gaming Content is the core focus here on Smashcast. Smashcast is a platform for gamers made by gamers, and so is their content. However, there are a few limitations and rules in place.
  • You can stream gaming content of currently released titles, early access, alpha, beta phases, as long as you are not bound by an NDA. Smashcast will notify broadcasters if they receive takedown notices for any games not released or otherwise restricted and remove said content if necessary.
  • Nudity in games is limited to what is intended for the story; modifying a game to increase the amount of nudity or focusing on the sexual content of a game is not permitted.
  • Dating sims and other games of this category are permitted granted the broadcaster takes responsible action to censor any blatant sexual content (visual or audible) and sticks to the freely available version of the game (e.g. via Steam).
  • Smashcast determines on a case-by-case basis which games and streams are allowed on their platform, and those may include games that received specific ratings from the various ratings authorities, such as AO by ESRB or 18 by PEGI.
  • Streamers are required to set their channel age limit to 18+ when streaming an adults only game which prompts an age gate to every viewer. Smashcast will remove streams that do not follow these rules.
  • If you are prone to using strong language, you might want to consider setting your channel to 18+ in the first place. Just because you put a mature content filter on this doesn’t mean you can stream anything either.
  • Artwork; digital and hardcopy. Other art forms are welcomed such as cooking, robotics, nerdy/gaming-construction, etc. That being said, keep it classy. The same rules for streaming gameplay apply to drawings as well.
  • Music production and mixing. For this subject Smashcast requires visually seeing what is being done, seeing a static screen doesn’t show you have any rights to what you’re doing!
  • Game, Web, and Program development. Impress your audience with your coding skills.
  • Nerdy/Gaming-related podcasts and streams. Tell your viewers about your awesome match in CS:GO last week, or your epic collection of Spiderman comic books. Keep it clean, nerdy, and fresh. (Examples of acceptable content: 3D printing, ham radio channels, etc.)

Here is  a list of what can’t be streamed:

  • Movies, TV Shows, Sports, etc. Regardless of subject matter
  • Music videos and music with no visual content. You’re more than welcome to have your own music in the background, but Smashcast moderators will remove content without further notice if they receive a takedown notice. If you plan on pushing a highlight to YouTube Smashcast is not liable for takedown notices or the music being muted out of the video.
  • Cheating/Hacking/Exploits in online multiplayer games
  • Omegle and sites like it

Of course, Smashcast cannot outmatch Twitch, but it is one of the biggest game streaming platforms in some significant ways.

It has its own rich variety of features that definitely makes this platform one of the best, if not the best, for gaming.

PROS
  • Best image quality
  • Low demand on PC resources
  • Friendly 24/7 support
